Rockchip mit über 35 Ice Cream Sandwich Tablets auf der CES!

Momentan wird mein E-Mail Postfach mit Pressemitteilungen und Einladungen für die CES bombardiert, die im Januar 2012 stattfindet. Meistens werden dort keine konkreten Informationen preisgegeben, außer es handelt sich um irgendwelche neuen Hüllen oder Kopfhörer für irgendein Gerät. Doch der Chip Hersteller Rockchip hat gerade eine interessante Pressemitteilung veröffentlicht, laut der sie auf der CES Tablets mit Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich von 35 bis 40 Firmen präsentieren werden. Die meisten werden den 1,2GHz RK2818 nutzen, der sicherlich auch in dem neuen Archos 70b steckt.

Tablets mit den Prozessoren von Rockchip werden hauptsächlich in China angeboten, sind aber auch hier in vielen billigeren Tablets vertreten, z.B. oft in denen von Archos. Auf der CES werde ich ganz sicher den Rockchip Stand besuchen und ein paar Videos von den Ice Cream Sandwich Tablets machen. Vermutlich wird keine oder so gut wie keine der 35 bis 40 Firmen ihre Tablets direkt in Deutschland anbieten, andere Firmen werden die Tablets aber von denen kaufen und dann unter ihrem eigenen Namen in Deutschland auf den Markt bringen. Die meisten der hier erhältlichen „Billig-Tablets“ waren auch letztes Jahr auf der CES am Rockchip Stand zu finden.

Chinese-based Company to Release New Android 4.0

FUZHOU, CHINA (21 December 2011) – Fuzhou Rockchip Electronics Co., Ltd, a leading developer of fabless semiconductors with an emphasis on Mobile Internet Platforms, will release the RK2918 chip for Google’s Android 4.0 Operating System – also known as the Ice Cream Sandwich – at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, January 10-13. Their booth – #36835 – will be located in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, Upper Level. Rockchip will also participate in ShowStoppers at CES, on Tuesday, January 10 at The Wynn Hotel

With more than 80 percent of the Chinese tablet market presently using Rockchip, the Fuzhou-based company is looking to expand worldwide through CES. Currently the number one Mobile Internet and MP3/MP4 solution for all products in China excluding Apple®, Rockchip will likely have the largest single selection of tablets at CES with 35-to-40 different brands on-site.

Since their inception in 2001, Rockchip has quickly emerged as a major player on the Mobile Internet Platforms world stage. The company’s first chip, the 27xx series, provided a great alternative for practically decoding MP3/MP4 products. Last year at CES, Rockchip released its RK2818 processor, and with a gallant effort, has produced its RK2918 chip only one short year later. The 2011 RK2818 chip was the first chip to decode Google WebM VP8 hardware and is compatible with the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).

“The RK2918 is essentially the heart and soul of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich,” said Chen Feng, Vice Present of Rockchip. “While most tablets in Asia, and a large number in North America, are currently using the 4.0 processor, we have incorporated significant upgrades available to the 2.3 version that can be integrated directly from the user’s tablet.”

And so, thanks to Rockchip, the race between Android and Apple continues. Clearly, the best is yet to come …
